WHAT IS HDD? | HD DRILLING CONTRACTORS
HDD or Horizontal Directional Drilling is a trenchless boring method for installing underground cables, pipes and conduits in a shallow curve along a prescribed bore path with the use of a surface-launched rig / machine, which minimises the disruption of th surrounding area, for example, roads and driveways.
With HDD safety risks are also minimised as compared to open trenches and are perfectly suited to high volume traffic situations.
With HDD safety risks are also minimised as compared to open trenches and are perfectly suited to high volume traffic situations.
Trenching and excavation work is often far more costly and not practical and this is where HDD comes in, reducing the re-instatement costs of roads, verges and driveways and therefore satisfying the demands of local Municipalities and residential, commercial and industrial estate managers.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
As per the image, there are three main stages as follows:
Pilot Drilling:
Installing a pilot hole drilled from the surface at a pre-determined angle and along a prescribed path. During the pilot bore, a sonde (transmitter) and a tracking (receiver) device are utilized to be able to precisely locate and steer the drill string underneath the surface.Reaming:
Enlarges the pilot hole to achieve the required size. Reaming is usually performed in stages until the final desired diameter of hole is reached.Pipe pullback:
The pipe is connected to the drill string and then pulled from the exit pit side towards the entry pit side on the same pre-reamed path.Installation examples:
- Water lines
- Sewer lines
- Storm water
- Cable ducts (optic fibre, telecommunication and electricity etc.)
Costs:
The cost of HDD is determined by the diameter and length of the product to be installed as well as the ground conditions and site risks.Areas of Service:
